Organisation: Lady Alice Primary School

Location: Glasgow and West

Sector: Education

Mode: Walking

The intention of the project was to get the majority (if not all) of Lady Alice Primary School pupils walking every day. As a Health Promoting and Eco School, Lady Alice wanted to help tackle the poor health record of those living in the West of Scotland and to cut down on the number of cars outside the school.

Walk on Wednesdays encourages children to walk to school every Wednesday, recording their participation on a chart in class, with incentives for pupils at predetermined targets (stickers, pencils, erasers).

The coveted top reward is an attractive enamel badge shaped as a foot. Pupils living further away are encouraged to ride and stride – getting dropped off en route (or a bus stop earlier) and walking the rest of the way – so that they can be eligible for a reward.

Launched with a short play performed by Junior Road Safety Officers and other pupils, WOW is further promoted by banners outside to remind drivers of their responsibility to drive carefully.

The result of the scheme is that the majority of pupils now walk to school with as many as 92% of our P7 pupils walking on Walk to School Weeks (75.5% overall).

Further promotional incentives include `Golden Boot` awards for classes topping the league table for most walk to school journeys in a week, certificates for classes with the greatest increase in walking, and "Lady Alice Walks to School" pencils for pupils who walk to school all week.
