School Travel Plans
Over 60% of Scottish schools are working on or implementing a School Travel Plan.
Like other Travel Plans, School Travel Plans identify issues relating to the school journey, set out agreed aims and packages of measures to promote more sustainable travel choices for pupils, parents, staff and visitors.
Benefits of School Travel Plans
School Travel Plans can:
- contribute towards A Curriculum for Excellence, Health Promoting Schools, Eco-Schools and Active Schools programmes
- improve travel awareness and road user skills
- increase opportunity for independence and self-confidence

Cycle Friendly School Award
This national award has been developed by Cycling Scotland to encourage all Primary schools in Scotland to become more cycle friendly and ultimately to increase the number of children cycling to school.
Travelling Green
Travelling Green is a classroom resource that accords with A Curriculum for Excellence. The Travelling Green teaching pack contains a Teacher's Handbook with lesson plans and worksheets, and folders for pupils containing useful resources.
The pack is available to every primary school in Scotland free of charge, but there is an expectation that schools will undertake some local training and also participate in the evaluation of the project if required.
Both the packs and associated Training is accessible through your local School Travel Co-ordinator.
Case Studies
There are case studies available from Sustrans' Safe Routes to Schools website where you can also sign up for regular newsletters.
